Advanced Ballast Water Treatment System from SAM Electronics

Hamburg, June 27, 2011 – SAM Electronics has extended its product portfolio
with introduction of the Techcross-developed Electro-Cleen SystemTM (ECS), an
IMO-approved ballast water treatment facility featuring advanced electrolysis
technology for prevention of harmful marine ecological and economic damage in
accordance with authorised regulations.

Introduced by SAM at Nor-Shipping 2011, the patented series of systems utilises
electrolysis methods by way of generating electric currents for increased
disinfection and destruction of micro-organisms while preventing any re-growth in
ballast tanks. Residual chlorine in treated water ensures that no filtration or
re-treatment at de-ballasting is required.

Other main system advantages include low power consumption and operational
costs, with electrode modules as a key component having an estimated life cycle
of between 8,000 and 10,000 hours over a period of nearly 20 years. Modular
systems are simple to install and maintain and can also be easily replaced by
ship crews. Automatic operation is available via Windows-based protocols while
there are also options for custom-designed assemblies.

Designed for both retrofitting and installation aboard all types of newbuildings,
Electro-Cleen SystemTM models are already in widespread service aboard
VLCCs, bulk carriers and tankers. As such, they have been specifically developed
to meet the International Convention for the Control & Management of Ships’
Ballast Water and Sediments (BWM) which aims to prevent the potentially
devastating effects of the spread of harmful acquatic organisms carried by ships’
ballast water from one region to another.
