L-3’s NACOS and VALMATIC Platinum™ Integrated Systems to Be
Installed on Carnival Breeze
HAMBURG, Germany, June 21, 2011 Hamburg-based SAM Electronics, an
L-3 company, and L-3 Valmarine of Norway, both part of L-3 Marine & Power
Systems, announced today that they have been awarded contracts from the
Italian Fincantieri shipyard for their NACOS Platinum series and VALMATIC
Platinum™ next-generation fully integrated navigation and automation systems.
Both systems will be delivered for Carnival Cruise Line’s new 130,000-gt Carnival
Breeze cruise ship, the third in the line’s Dream Class. The ship is scheduled to
enter service in the spring of 2012.
“L-3 is very pleased to have won this contract for a third Carnival cruise ship from
our Fincantieri customer,” said Ulrich Weinreuter, president of SAM Electronics.
“This award reaffirms our position as the market leader of integrated navigation
and automation systems on the newest generation of cruise ships.”
NACOS Platinum provides a complete range of ship control systems and
functions running on a shared set of standardized workstations, with multi-
function displays supported by a common system network. The system is
comprised of two S-band and two X-band IP-Radars linked to six Multipilot
workstations via an Ethernet network. Each of these can be used as Radar or
Ecdis, including Conning functions as standard. Also, two additional Multipilots
are designed separately for Ecdis and Conning. Based on dual-head technology
that offers multi-display support to the workstation, Conning can run on a second
display in parallel, while the master station operates in Ecdis mode. This fourth-
generation development technology integrates various components and advanced
functions into a single system capable of managing an increased number of
operational ship functions in a more comprehensive and cost-effective manner.
L-3 Valmarine’s VALMATIC Platinum seamlessly integrates with the SAM
Electronics NACOS system and handles approximately 20,000 input/output
signals controlled by six redundant process stations that cover seven different
fire zones. Operator control is done via 10 multi-functional workstations located
in different control centres, such as the engine control room, bridge and officer
cabins. Each workstation can handle up to four monitors and has individual split
views, giving the operator visual access to large areas simultaneously. An
Information Management System (IMS), including a history database with up to
one year of storage capacity, analysis tools, reporting functions, diary and more,
is also available for optimizing the ship’s operational performance.
The entire L-3 solution is designed with “hot swap” capacity, enabling
replacement of any component, and a high degree of redundancy is built into all
levels of the system, preventing any single failure that could cause loss of
control, monitoring or safety functions.
In addition, auxiliary systems and sensors, engineering, cabling, installation, and
console production will be provided by APSS of Italy, also a division within the
L-3 Marine & Power Systems group of companies.
